Weather as Art

A Data-Generative Concept Pitch

Company

AccuWeather

Role

Art Director

Originated the concept, assembled the partner roster, and built the revenue model. Presented the design and concept section to the C-suite while the lead product manager presented the business case. Partner Development

WeatherCode was a proposal to do something no weather company had done: treat proprietary weather data as the raw material for fine art.

The System

A curated visual and audio experience based on AccuWeather's proprietary data.

Using AccuWeather's API, weather data is brought to life through dynamic visualizations and custom audio compositions based on the brand's sonic sound system. These artistic renderings showcase the beauty and power of data by capturing specific weather patterns and allowing audiences to relive fleeting moments.

The generative nature of this project ensures a completely unique and varied experience since both the visual and sound respond to real weather data. As parameters such as temperature, wind speed, air quality, change with time, so do the visual and audio components attached to them.

WeatherCode will allow users to hear and experience weather from anywhere in the world, in a completely new way.

Infinite and unrepeatable because the inputs never stop changing.

The Partners

Two partners were already in active relationships with AccuWeather and all three were confirmed before the deck went to leadership. Rare Volume would handle generative visuals and platform, their past work includes a permanent installation at Torre Glories in Barcelona and a live AI-generated symphony at the Louvre. Massive Music would handle audio. Loyalkaspar would consult on brand integration. The confirmed-partner status before the pitch was central to its credibility.

The Business Case

Initial launch: 10,000 blind-box animated NFTs. Self-service minting for personally significant weather moments. Apple TV ambient display. Museum installations. Budget $325k, structured so that modest per-unit NFT sales would recover costs entirely, with charitable proceeds to Girls Who Code built in regardless. Leadership described it as the most creative project ever pitched to the company. It wasn’t a hard no, follow-up meetings with the C-suite continued after the pitch before the project ultimately didn’t move forward.

Challenge

AccuWeather holds decades of proprietary hyperlocal weather data for every location on earth, updated continuously, displayed as numbers and maps.

No one had asked what else it could be.

Concept

Live weather data drives generative visual and audio compositions, temperature, wind, air quality, and precipitation each mapped to a dimension of the output. Frozen moments minted as NFTs. No two ever the same.
